In this battle, both heroes are killed due to the betrayal of Varimathras and Grand Apothecary Putress, the “leader” of the Royal Apothecary Society. While Varimathras stages a coup in Undercity to take it from Sylvannas, Putress uses the New Plague that the Forsaken had been making to destroy the Scourge against the Alliance, Horde, and Scourge alike. This results in the death of the two heroes, and leads both Thrall and Varian to attack Undercity.
